4 Paws for Ethan!!

We have started a new adventure!  The husband and I have decided that a service dog was needed for Ethan to continue to thrive and make steps towards independence.  We have contacted 4 Paws for Ability, and after an application process, a phone interview, and contract review and signage, we have now reached the most daunting stage.  FUNDRAISING!   We have created an online account for this: 4 Paws for Ethan!

We also have a PayPal option at the 4 Paws website, DONATE NOW!!!
Under special instructions, please say that your donation is in Honor of Ethan Rice.  Every little bit helps, and every little bit is tax deductible!

Please check out 4 Paws for Ability's Make A Dream Come True page, where you can find our press release on Ethan.

So, the first day of school has come and gone.  August 18th, 2015 was the marking of our 1st grader and our 4th grader.  Here they are on the first day of school.  It was a warm day considering it was mid-August, but they were excited to get back to work!

Teagan kept saying, "I get to play with my friends again!"  My 2 little men are now attending the same school: Carlin Elementary.  I love the fact that they are in the same school together.

So far the year has gone great.  T is above his class in reading skills and Ethan is working on straight A's!  We shall see!

The Cousins!!

It is not often we get to see and visit with extended family, especially on the Rice side.  So we took full advantage of it, when Ralph's older brother, sister-in-law, and some of their kids (who brought their kids) came to OHIO!!!!

Our first meeting we at Ralph's mom's house, where everyone was staying!  OH MY GOODNESS!  The kids all had a blast and I'm so glad they love each other!  Sprinkler on in the backyard, BBQ on the grill.  FUN IN THE SUN!!!  What a wonderful time we had.  From left to right: Cousin Bed, Teagan, Ethan, Cousin Kenzie, & Cousin Maddie.  What beautiful, fun loving kids!!

Before they left to go their respective homes, we were able to get a group picture at our place.  An evening filled with BBQ, swimming and all around catch-up fun!  I LOVE this picture!!

Adults in the back row, left to right: Nephew Tristan, Bro-in-law Charlie, Ralph & ME
Middle Row: Niece Sarah, Sis-in-law Dani, baby nephew Sam
Front Row: Niece Maddie, Niece Kenzie, Nephew Ben, Teagan & Ethan

We must get together more often!!!

Virginia Beach!

WELL!  I guess with the invention of Facebook, out goes Blogger!  I haven't updated as much as I would like too!  So, let's get back into it with a 1ST FAMILY VACATION!!!!  We went to Virginia Beach.  For those of you who know me, this was more of a 'coming home' than visiting.  I finally got to show the boys where I grew up and my haunts.  I even got to visit with childhood friends, who are my besties today!!!

I love that our families got to meet and that our kids hit it off right from the start!
My, how has time flown!  From wee kids to adults in our own right.

We spent a week at the beach and the boys LOVED every minute of it!  They are now pestering me to go back!  I wanna go back too, but alas, responsibilities!
Teagan prefers to build sand castles and play on the beach.  Ethan prefers to catch waves.  I LOVE IT ALL!!!  I didn't realize how much I missed it until I was there.  I also learned a lot about myself.  I prefer the cold and snow over the heat and sun!

My favorite part was watching the sunrise.  Here is a picture of the boys enjoying the sunrise with me on our last  morning there.

Where has the time gone?

Well, time has flown, and the micro blog world of Facebook has taken over more than a large blog like this.  It's hard to remember to keep updating this blog and remembering I have friends not on Facebook who would like the occasional pictures and updates!  LOL!  Well, let's see if this is a start to keeping up!

Ethan is now in 3rd grade and LOVES it.  He's growing like a weed and flourishing in all areas.  He even has some kids I would call friends and they help him and stick up for him.

He finally is choosing his own outfits and hair style.  I've discovered he prefers more of a preppy style.  Clean cut with messy spikes.  He is FABULOUS!!!  We are so proud of the young man he's becoming.

He still wants to be a chemist when he grows up.  It won't be too hard if he keeps up with his schooling like he is.  He has straight A's and an almost perfect attendance record.  With help from his intervention specialist, speech therapist and Occupational therapist, I'm sure he'll be wonderful at whatever profession he chooses!

Teagan is now in all day kindergarten and really keeps us busy with his non-stop energy.  He's in speech therapy to help with a lisp he has, but otherwise, would have the equivalent to straight A's.  He's above minimum requirements to go to first grade and reads extraordinarily well for a kindergartener.  He helps the other kids in his class read and is a fantastic teacher's helper. I had to laugh when he told me WHY he likes riding the bus.  "I like riding the bus mom. "  Why?  "Because it's bumpy!"

Both boys are in Karate and doing fantastic with it.  Ethan is a yellow belt and Teagan a white.  It's hard work, but both love it!

Overall, Ralph and I are doing well also.  We've been updating the house and just got it refinanced.  We'll be able to pay it off in 15 years!!!  Anyways, enough for now.  It's a book and I have errands to run!!!

New beds! Well, new to us. :)

The boys needed new beds.  The beds that we had bought the boys when there were ready for twin beds had been falling apart for awhile.  We also had to get Ethan a desk, so that he could practice being organized for school.  That is another long story all together.  Anyways, Ralph decided to stop at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore while I took Ethan to Karate one Saturday.  After making our donation and browsing around, he discovered some head and foot boards.  I joined him at the store and for $55 we purchased 2 sets of matching beds (head and foot boards) and a desk for Ethan!

Here is a close up of the wood.  It was dark in color and the beds were solid and still in good condition, but the finish was... bad.  It needed redone.  Small, superficial scratches here and there and just general wear and tear and fading.

Here is the head boards.  As you can see, the shape is very lovely but if you look downward you'll see in the middle of the head board a severe scratch and fading of the varnish.

One set was complete with hardware, but as you can see, this set in the picture was missing some hardware.  This posed a great problem down the road, but it is now resolved.  Anyways, this foot board is in good shape, with the exception of wear the hardware needs to be.  That was worn, torn and in need of some serious TLC!

It took me 2 whole days, but with seriously careful sanding and a steady hand, I was able to remove the lesser scratches completely and lessen the severe ones.  With a good brush and darker varnish, I was able to renew these beds and I finished it all with a Matte Finish polyurethane.

I think both sets of beds turned out fantastic. Our neighbor even commented on how wonderful they looked too, as he was able to watch me finish them from beginning to end.

Here is a close up of the post that gave me a little trouble but worked out great anyways!!

AND FINALLY!!!  The finished product!!  Ethan and Teagan finally have new beds!  I think they turned out perfect!!

Both Ethan and Teagan got to talk and have a picture with Santa today!  They were both very happy to do so!  I was able to talk with Santa too and I absolutely loved this man.  It is his real beard and he has been Santa for the past 15 years.  Yes, Santa is sitting in a very large, green velvet chair.  I LOVED the chair!

I hope everyone December is as great as ours is starting off!  HAPPY DECEMBER!
